- Last summer (yes, summer. Skis are cheaper then.) I gave some serious
- thought to buying some Kazama OB's. I had heard that they were the
- board of choice for both lift-based and backcountry pin heads. I went into
- Neptune Mountaineering (Boulder, CO) one day to pick their brains on the
- subject and this is what they told me:
-
- The Kazama line is *really* good. But they prefer the "Asnes" line.
- Evidently some or all of the Kazama boards (and the entire Karhu line as
- well) use a foam core, which, evidently, breaks down over time. The Asnes
- guys use a wood honecomb construction or something, which, evidently, is
- supposed to be more durable and result in a smoother running and turning
- ski. They also recommended the old favourites, Fischer GTS's. I have a
- firend who skis these and they are holding up great! Lessee...Oh, yeah,
- Evoloution out of Salt Lake City is supposed to make some wicked resort-
- skiing cruise missles! I hear they're outa sight! (but, so is the
- price :-/) Finally theres Black Diamond, used-to-be-TUA's (maybe they still
- are, don't know). I haven't really heard much either way on these boards,
- but they can't be all bad.
-
- I probably haven't told you anything you didn't already know; so I'll
- tell you something else you already know: go out and demo all the skis you
- can, and chew the fat with other tele guys. It's the best way around to
- evaluate skis. If I were to leave one final piece of advice: I'd just get
- Fischers and be safe all over the mountain.
