- I played with them at Eagle River Nordic's trails in Wisconsin a couple of
- weeks ago. Conditions were beautiful for skating (IMHO) -- firm but fresh,
- not at all icy. They were very easy to skate with, which I gather is the whole
- point. Supposedly, they're to be an Introduction to Skating ski. They
- were reasonaby fast on the flats and downhills. Most of the uphills I used
- them on were herringbone steepness (for which they were fine) so I can't say
- much there, except that they were fine during the little bit of diagonal-V and
- uphill V1 I did do. They were not as fast as my Fischer Top Skates (which are
- a relatively heavy, older model ski) but I didn't time any loops. They
- *seem* faster that they are, I think, because they are not as
- stable as longer skis -- they are relatively squirlie.
- I presume that this is becused of the drastically reduced edge length.
- They are supposed to fit anyone, and four of us (two between 110 and 120 lbs,
- one at about 180 lbs or more, and me at 165 lbs) had no trouble with them.
- As mentioned, they're aimed at the introductory market and I think that priced
- at less than $200 that is reasonable. They'd also be good for a growing
- junior skier [who didn't want to race in them -- or if so who is *real*
- short 8-) ]. My brother-in-law, who has been striding for >20 years and
- is a veteren of quite a few Birkies, wanted to try my skating skis after
- using the Revolutions and is talking about getting himself skating or
- combi skis now, so I guess that they were a hit with him.
- If you're interested, I've been striding for a long time but just
- started skating at the end of last season. I have, however, been skating a lot
- this season and have gotten reasonably proficient (enough that I'm flirting
- with the idea of skating the Birkie this year).

- The world's oldest ... ski race, the Vasaloppet, annually attracts about 9000
- Sweeds and about 1500 foreigners.... In completing the 85-km course, the
- average racer loses four to five pounds ... equivalent to having 280 racers
- disappear completely during the course of the event.
