- Tom,
-
- I completely tore my ACL and partially tore my MCL 11 months ago on a NASTAR
- course. My Orthopedist told me I could let it heal itself via scar tissue or
- I could get the knee reconstruction. His recommendation was for the surgery
- because I am fairly young (26) and very active. His justification for
- recommending the surgery was that I would have too much movement within the
- knee between the femur and the tibia/fibula which would cause a great deal of
- wear to the soft meniscus cartilage. He said if I was 15 years older or not
- very active, he would treat it with a limited range of motion brace for 8
- weeks along with several months of physical therapy.
-
- I am not sure from your post if your ACL is partially torn on completely torn.
- From what I understand about partial tears, they can heal on their own but
- rarely to 100 percent. I guess you need to consider the severity of the tear,
- your age, and the frequency of your athletic activity.
-
- Good luck! Let me know if you need any more information.
