- Our beloved Spooker (all black Persian with golden eyes) died
- last fall after 15 years of devoted friendship. We are now
- ready to think about some new kittens.
-
- We would like to get 2 kittens so they will grow up together
- and be friends. My wife and I have a hectic schedule that
- often involves late hours so even though Spooker did well
- in this situation we thought two kitties might keep each
- other company.
-
- A key goal for us is maximizing the odds of getting the
- personality traits we want: affection, docility, ease-of-
- handling (this is especially important if we get longhairs
- who need frequent grooming) and good health.
-
- We've done extensive reading and our books seem very consistent
- in ascribing personality traits to different breeds, and
- very consistent in what those traits are. From this we
- think that shorthaired (lower maintainance) breeds that
- might be good would be Exotic Shorthairs or Scottish Folds.
- Persians might be a good long-haired breed, or maybe Hima-
- layan.
-
- [ Before someone says "I've got an American Shorthair who's as
- loving as an angel" I must say I'm *well aware* that breed
- personality traits are statistical generalizations and that
- any *individual* cat may not be true to breed personality.
- I just want to put the odds as much in my favor as possible ]
-
- Another advantage, for us, of getting a "bred" cat is that
- we can meet the breeder (and make sure conditions are good)
- meet the queen, and start getting the kittens used to handling
- at a very young age (~ 2 weeks is recommended as a good
- time to start handling them regularly.
-
- Some questions --
-
- A Scottish Fold isn't bread to another Scottish Fold; it's
- bred with either a British Shorthair or an American Short-
- hair. But all our books ascribe different personalities
- to those two breeds. If I prefer the British Shorthair
- personality, should I make sure any Fold I get is bred
- from that stock, or doesn't it matter?
-
- Also, Himmies are Persians with Siamese coloring (this is
- not to be confused with Balinese!) Do they have any Siamese
- personality traits?
-
- Any other advice or comments would be appreciated.
