- If your kitty can't get any green grass to munch on in the winter
- months, you can grow an oats garden indoors. Oats are available at feed
- stores and 25 cents will buy more than enough for the entire winter.
- Just plant some in potting soil in shallow containers (cottage cheese or
- margarine containers are fine), dampen slightly and cover with plastic
- wrap to retain the moisture. Make sure there's no more than a 1/4 of
- soil on top of the oats grains. Keep the container in a warm place and
- in less than a week the oats will sprout. Remove the plastic, but make
- sure the soil doesn't dry out. It'll take another week for the plants to
- get about 2" high and ready for kitty to devour. I usually plant several
- containers at intervals of a week or so. That way, he has a constant
- supply. You'll find that he can munch up a container's worth of oats in
- a day or two. I've also heard of planting grass seed instead of oats,
- and you might try that if you can't get the oats. You can buy already
- planted containers at pet shops -- called "Kitty Greens" -- but they run
- about $4-$5 and are no different thatn the DIY variety.
