- MI>RC-> Tacking on ABS isn't my idea of a hot new design, like
- MI>RC-> the RC30 or even the CBR900, much less the GTS1000.
-
- MI> I wouldn't call the CBR900RR a new design. It's merely a refinement of
- MI>existing designs. I can't think of a single item of new technology in the
- MI>entire bike. It's quite conventional, really... just LIGHT, with an extreme
- MI>emphasis on "mass centralization".
-
- Okay, now it's time for my exposition on the subject of what
- constitutes a cool motorcycle. At the local motorcycle show, I had an
- opportunity to talk with a representative of a product design firm (New
- image? next image? ??) who have been working with KTM of late. I
- commented to him that I thought that the most technically impressive
- bike at the show was not the GTS, but rather the CBR900RR. I really mean
- it. The GTS was neat for including virtually every current cool
- motorcycle technology in one publicly available bike, but no so neat for
- its dry weight of 533lbs. That's pathetic, even for a sport tourer, when
- it has the lineage that this one does. The CBR is easily the motorcycle
- that shows the most painstaking attention to design details of any bike
- on the market today. I belive VERY fervrently that any bike this light
- is NOT conventional. This puppy should win a design award for its
- excellence. Light weight is far more important than improveme
- ts in horsepower, brakes, or suspensions because
- _light_weight_is_all_of_these_things. A bike that weighs less
- automatically goes faster, stops faster, and handles faster.
-
- I admire Honda for doing the right thing instead of the glitzy thing. I
- suspect it was very difficult to sell ideas like a conventional front
- fork to marketing, but it has paid off. The engineers scored a victory
- with this bike, and for that we should be happy.
-
- Lightness is the one technology that I think is lacking in today's
- market. Every bike on the market (Except maybe the deliberately fat Fat
- Boy) would be a better bike if it was lighter.
