- Until the late '50s, the gearbox usually was a separate unit (..box), driven
- from the crankshaft by a chain. This construction is known as 'pre unit'.
- At that time moto manufacturers began building the gearbox and the cylinder/
- crankshaft assembly into one single housing. They called this 'unit
- construction', by which 'pre unit' derived.
