- A comment about AMA/Frank B. Hall:
-
- I bought a 1992 R100R in August of 1992. I was 25 years old,
- motorcycle license for a year, clean record for 7 years, single. The
- dealer had insurance for about a $1K/year, but I said "hey, lemme look
- around".
-
- Most of the places I found were $1100-$1200. Then I remember
- AMA/Frank B. Hall.
-
- Their quote?
-
- First, they said $750 or so a year. "Oh goodie!" thought I. Then they
- said "Oh wait, you're single. That'll be $2650 a year.". $2650.
- Roughly a third of the purchase price of a retro BMW. I asked where
- the $750 figure came from.
- Them: "That's the married rate."
- Me: "Ok, so how old do I have to be before my rates are in that
- range."
- Them: "36."
- Me: "That's completely outrageous!"
- Them: "I'd be suprised if you can find it cheaper anywhere else.
- That's a big bike."
- Me: "Uh, the dealer quoted me $950 or so, <foo> quoted 1100, <bar>
- quoted 1170."
- Them (interrupting): "Well, those rates are probably just for
- liability and not for full coverage."
- Me: "No, that's full coverage. I've even got a written quote from my
- dealer."
- Them: "That can't be right."
- Me: "Well, I guess we'll find out. Bye." [click]
-
- The next day, I discovered a State Farm agent on San Antonio who wrote
- me a full coverage policy, regular usage, yada yada yada for around
- $850 a year.
-
- If you get a good rate from AMA/FBH, I'm glad for you. But I'd be
- really surprised.
