  22. I bought a 1992 R100R in August of 1992.  I was 25 years old,
  23. motorcycle license for a year, clean record for 7 years, single.  The
  24. dealer had insurance for about a $1K/year, but I said "hey, lemme look
  25. around".

  27. Most of the places I found were $1100-$1200.  Then I remember
  28. AMA/Frank B. Hall.

  30. Their quote?

  32. First, they said $750 or so a year. "Oh goodie!" thought I.  Then they
  33. said "Oh wait, you're single.  That'll be $2650 a year.".  $2650.
  34. Roughly a third of the purchase price of a retro BMW.  I asked where
  35. the $750 figure came from.
  36. Them:  "That's the married rate."
  37. Me:    "Ok, so how old do I have to be before my rates are in that
  38. range."
  39. Them:  "36."
  40. Me:    "That's completely outrageous!"
  41. Them:  "I'd be suprised if you can find it cheaper anywhere else.
  42. That's a big bike."
  43. Me:    "Uh, the dealer quoted me $950 or so, <foo> quoted 1100, <bar>
  44. quoted 1170."
  45. Them (interrupting): "Well, those rates are probably just for
  46. liability and not for full coverage."
  47. Me:    "No, that's full coverage.  I've even got a written quote from my
  48. dealer."
  49. Them:  "That can't be right."
  50. Me:    "Well, I guess we'll find out.  Bye." [click]

  52. The next day, I discovered a State Farm agent on San Antonio who wrote
  53. me a full coverage policy, regular usage, yada yada yada for around
  54. $850 a year.

  56. If you get a good rate from AMA/FBH, I'm glad for you.  But I'd be
  57. really surprised.
