- I flew model airplanes many years ago, in the sixies, and when I was
- about 14, I bought an R/C glider that was manufactured by Fox mfg
- (the same folks thast still make engines) it seems fox bought
- out a famous manufacturer of model kits, Berkley models in about 1946.
- I understand that they only produced balsa, die cut models for a few
- years before reverting back to nothing but engine man. But anyway,
- this model, which is still in the original box, with the plans, and
- ALL of the wood, is called the "Buzzard" This thing is HUGE.
- At least by the size stuff we flew in the 60's and 70's before chainsaw
- engines came into use. The model has 144" wingspan, two 4' tips that
- have the polyheidrial built in plug into the main wing, and it has
- about a 14 or 16" root width at the fuselage. The Fuselage is 9'
- long, and believe me, you could put a gallon jug of fuel in it, and still
- have room for today's radio gear. The instructions tell you that if
- your going to use MORE than 9 POUNDS of radio gear (we are talking
- tubes, here guys) how to set up the angle of attack of the wing.
- But, they also say "DO NOT EVEN HAND GLIDE THIS MODEL WITHOUT YOUR
- NAME AND ADDRESS ON IT!" The airfoil is undercambered, and while this
- thing has die cut ribs, it must have 10 individual spars in the wings,
- the 24" stabilizer is built much the same. They show a engine mounted
- on a pylon above the wing, or give options for bungee launch.
- Anyway, I have gotten out of R/C a number of years ago, but I still
- have this kit. I believe that it was manufactured in about 1948.
- Hell, it was old when I bought it. I've even got an Olsen & Rice
- .23 engine I'll throw in the deal.. it is from about '52 I think.
- Last time I used the engine, it ran.. anyway you can have this
- museum piece kit and the engine for $300.00
- E-mail me, 'cause I don't read this group
- thanks,
