- Hi again,
-
- While explaining what expando-foam is to someone who emailed me, I started
- thinking about the use of this pink foam that I found in a hardware store
- out here. I think it is marketed as an insulation to be used on the outside
- of a house before you put up the siding. I once saw Bob Vila using it that
- way on one of his fix-up shows.
-
- This stuff is pink and is NOT styrofoam. I think it has a silver
- foil on one side and has the consistancy and strength of the expanding foam
- that is marketed under names like "Great Stuff" and "Mountains in Minutes".
-
- Anyway, a 4x8 sheet weighs less than 3 pounds and is about an inch thick.
- A sheet costs about $15 where I saw it. And looks like it could be cut up
- using the cookie-cutter style and used in place of plywood. Since it is
- foam, you could use a knife (much unlike homasote) to work with it. I suspect
- you could place flimsy supports every foot or so to get the grades thay you
- want, and then fill the entire underside with expanding foam. You would be
- left with a very rigid surface. And your whole layout would probably weigh
- less than yourself!
-
- The only issue I am not sure of would be how to mount track. Foam can be a
- strange animail when it comes to glues. I suspect that bonded ballast would
- work ok, but only if you rough up the foam first. Or if you are a cork-fan,
- you could use the expando-foam as glue (it sticks like crazy to ANYTHING) to
- hold the cork, and then bond to the cork.
-
- Anyone try anything like this? I might give this a try tonight if my
- girlfriend would consider it an acceptable date activity. With any luck
- I will be happy even if the track mounting is a complete failure ;-)
