  20.     Not quite.  They tried to save the hand but were not able to.  They    
  21.     told him that he would have to lose the hand, and he refused to
  22.     allow the apmutation.  The gangrene (or whatever) spread and they
  23.     said the arm would have to come off.  He still refused.  Then the
  24.     hokey pokey thing happened with the crow and he gave his permission
  25.     to take the arm off.

  37.     Not what I got from the story.  The monk replied that the loss of
  38.     the arm, while seemingly a sorrowful event, was perhaps a blessing 
  39.     in disguise... valuable lessons and all that.  He also made mention
  40.     that the decision to allow the arm to be removed was the sole right
  41.     of the injured man.  I could not agree more.  There was none of that
  42.     "we MUST save him fromi himself" bullshit.
