- The name is Carlos Castaneda. There is a bit of controversy
- surrounding him and his books, so I make no assertions.
-
- He was purportedly a grad student in anthopology, who started out
- talking to this old guy, Don Juan Matus, who had knowledge of
- medicinal herbs. As it turns out, Don Juan is a practitioner of
- esoteric arts, which he terms sorcery. The series of books are the
- autobiographical account of Carlos' apprenticeship to Don Juan.
-
- The techniques have many analogues in esoteric Buddhist and Taoist
- yogas, as well as other traditions.
-
- The series of books are:
-
- The Teachings of Don Juan, a Yaqui Way of Knowledge
- A Separate Reality
- Journey to Ixtlan
- Tales of Power
- The Second Ring of Power
- The Eagle's Gift
- The Fire from Within
- The Power of Silence
-
- Journey to Ixtlan and Tales of Power are the best of the bunch IMHO,
- followed by the Power of Silence.
-
- Books by his fellow apprentices (allegedly ;-) )
-
- Sorcerer's Crossing, by Taisha Abelar. Very good. Covers certain
- topics Castaneda brushes over, and presents the woman's point of view.
- (Carlos could be accused of being quite sexist.)
-
- Being in Dream, by Florinda Donner. I haven't read this one, so I
- couldn't say.
-
- As an aside, (which makes this a little more relevant to this
- newsgroup ;-) ) _Sorcerer's Crossing_ makes explicit reference to
- martial arts and the effects of their practice on the sorcerer.
-
- cheers,
- Lorenzo
