- As in "vapourware"?
-
- The actual phrase I got by email was "real soon now and we mean it" or
- something like that. I'm reading this newsgroup very frequently
- now, since it all sounded quite convincing, and I expect 3.1 to
- pop up any minute....
-
- I can't speak for the dev team (as I am not a member) but they
- seem to have a two goals with 3.1:
-
- - They want to surprise us with 3.1, and therefore refuse to give
- any information on what will be part of 3.1.
- - They want a good quality release so 3.1 is tested and debugged
- extensively before it is made public.
-
- The unfortunate result is that nothing comes out of them until
- they are finished. This is a pity since a program like nethack
- needs something like two or three new versions a year to keep
- everybody's attention. Linux does the opposite; a new version of
- kernel every week, and people are releasing software for it at
- even higher rates. They need a special newsgroup to announce all
- the new releases, and keeping up to date is near impossible. But
- at least it is exciting!
-
- But it's the dev teams choice of course, since they are doing the
- programming.

-
- As far as I understood they want to keep supporting the MS-DOS
- range (from the standard 640k XT on). I don't know how they do it,
- but memory must be tight :-). The other supported architectures
- have their own problems though.
