- The play problem is not that most interesting thing on this hand:-).
- With 8 top tricks and threats in all 3 suits, a squeeze stands out..
- However, the more interesting question is...
-
- >For extra credit, where did the defense go wrong?
-
- All West has to do it NOT cash the fourth heart. Once dummy has 3
- hearts, West knows that partner has at most 4. So he should cash only
- 3 hearts, and exit passively with a spade as he knows partner can;t
- have a top trick anywhere...
-
- Also, 9 times out of 10 declarer will make the safety play of
- finessing clubs into the hand that is out of hearts -- "oops". Also,
- with only 3 tricks cashed, there is no way for declarer to rectify the
- count, and so he is down anyway.. I would certainly expect this play
- to be made by a good defender at IMPs -- it is a lot harder to do at
- matchpoints... speaking of which.. what do you do with this hand at
- MPs
-
- Sitting West holding, Holding xx,AKJ9,xxx,9xxx, the opponents briskly
- to 4NT after South deals and opens 1H
- North South
- - 1H
- 2D 2S (this is a reverse -- 2C is NOT 2/1 GF but "Standard")
- 3C 3N
- 4N P
-
- You lead the HK and dummy hits with
-
- Jxx,x,AJTxx,KQTx
-
- xx,AKJ9,xxx,9xxx
-
- This is matchpoints. Plan the defense...
