- Hello!
-
- My name is Lisa Stroyan, and I am another "lurker" and "horsaholic".
- I work for Hewlett-Packard's Software Engineering Systems Division in
- Fort Collins, Colorado.
-
- I have been involved with horses since grade school. I lived my
- childhood on a community (aka "commune" :) in Tennessee which had a
- "pony crew". All ponies and horses were owned by the community, and
- each one had a "crew" - a set of about 2-3 people that took care of
- and rode that horse (each had the horse for a given set of days,
- perhaps alternating Sundays). If you were in "pony crew" you also had
- a "barn day" - a day when you and others would clean the common barn,
- feed and water all the pastures (what fun - carrying water buckets in
- winter), etc. Anyway, I learned a lot about taking care of horses.
- It was also useful to be switched around to different ponies every
- once in a while, as our riding and horse skills improved.
-
- Also contributing to my horsaholism were summer trips to my cousin's,
- who does three day eventing in Virginia and taught me most of the
- formal riding technique that I have today. Oh, how jealous I was of
- her!
-
- Since I moved away from Tennessee, I have only dreamed about horses
- (literally) and then more recently, leased horses for a few months at
- a time. I don't currently have a horse, but I finally plan to get one
- this spring. I have finally reached that point in my life where I am
- settled, have a good job, and am financially stable. However, it has
- taken me a while to overcome the doubts I get from others that don't
- understand my need for a horse. My husband, alas, is not a horse
- person and is strongly entrenched in remaining that way (he has ridden
- several rental horses, to give him credit that is due). (If anyone
- else has been frustrated that those around them don't understand, or
- are upset by, their horse interests, I would be interested in talking
- about possible workarounds!).
-
- I like to ride English, but don't think I will compete, at least not
- at first. I would like to get an all-around horse that has a lot of
- personality and is flexible, rather than one that excels in one area.
- However, I would like the option of competing at a schooling-show
- level, etc, at some later time. Sigh...I suspect I will be looking
- for a while, since I am pretty picky about personality which is hard
- to determine/choose.
-
- Well, I will probably be asking for more help as I buy a horse (after
- I read all of the postings I have saved up). Talk to you then, and
- thanks for all the introductions!
