- This is posted for my wife, for reasons mentioned inside
- ---------------------------
- I will join in on the Bio craze...
-
- My name is Karen Gundy-Burlet. I am currently 31, and I work as a civil
- servant at in the Computational Algorithms and Applications branch of
- NASA-Ames Research Center, in Mountain View, California. Like quite a
- number of you out there, Ihave been through many years of schooling (at
- Berkeley and Stanford), ending up with a Ph.D. in Aeronautical
- Engineering. I specialized in Computational Fluid Dynamics and currently
- work in the area of CFD simulations of multistage axial turbomachinery
- flows.
-
- I used to post occasionally to r.e, but the current climate at
- NASA-Ames has all but eliminated our use of any recreational news-group
- or mailing list ("use of computers is for official government use only"
- is starting to be strictly enforced). I would like to know how the
- Lewis and Langley r.e contingent are still managing to post....I hope
- their access is not eventually restricted as well. Oh well, I am
- looking for an independent access to the net, so I can participate
- again. My husband is being nice enough to post this for me.
-
- Like most of the Bios I have read, I was stricken with "horseyitis" at
- a very young age. When I was 13, my mother relented and gave me riding
- lessons for my birthday. She soon found out that the stable was a
- peaceful place to relax while my sister and I were riding, so it became
- a fairly regular place for us to visit. My parents bribed my sister
- into getting better grades (and friends) by promising her a horse so I
- felt justified in getting myself a horse as reward for my grades (any
- excuse in a storm!). So, despite the fact that he failed a flexion
- test, I bought T-Bar because of his sweet attitude (9 yo. at the time
- QH gelding) in the summer after my freshman year. My
- then-boyfriend-now-very-sweet-husband was absolutely flabbergasted at
- the time (you bought a WHAT?!), but quickly came to like my "brown
- buddy". It was quite a busy time, working at NASA on a
- coop/summer/vacation time job to support my school/horse habit. My
- husband is not a horsey person, but actively supports my habit because
- it makes me more humanoid after a stressful week at work.
-
- Throughout the years, T-Bar (now 22) and I have had fun playing
- around....trail riding, rennaisance fair and play days. We were
- introduced to dressage several years ago and have loved it ever since!
- T-Bar has definitely developed an "I deserve respect" attitude from the
- dressage work... which is a lot of fun to work with. He puffs up with
- self-importance and carries himself beautifully as soon as he is
- complimented...and doesn't hesitate to crow-hop if he feels you are
- ruining his performance or questioning his integrity! He is definitely
- my buddy, and does a wonderful job of taking care of me.
-
- My 7 month old daughter sweetly demands much of my time, so lately it
- has been difficult to ride as much as I would like to. Fortunately,
- T-Bar is out in a pasture at a stables in San Jose, and has fun running
- around and cavorting with his mares. He very nicely puts up with my
- daughter pulling his hair and giggling at him everytime she looks at
- him. Hopefully, I will be able to find the time to take dressage
- lessons again in the near future.
