- I began to ride at age 8, have been riding for 32 years. When I was young
- and serious, I had aspirations of grand things. Unfortunately, my parents
- did not, for some reason, want me to compete. (I'm trying to let go of that
- in the midst of my mid-life crisis). I've had several horses in the family;
- mostly thoroughbreds, and I ride English. I did spend two summers in
- Montana on a working ranch, but that's another chapter. I have two sons who
- have begun to ride at the early age of 3 and 6. Therefore, we've recently
- purchased Poet, a Welsh pony out of the Coed Coch breeding. He's wonderful,
- a typical terrible two years old,(mostly scared of his shadow, the white
- horses of death and squeaky wheelbarrows...) and we're beginning him with
- long lines and easy backing stuff. My children won't ride him for some
- time, but they've bonded with him already. He's large enough for me to have
- fun on (I'm 5'1) as well until we can afford another. I plan a very easy
- course of early training and suppling dressage for the next year or two. We
- board him at a wonderful family oriented stable five minutes from my home in
- Ashland, Massachusetts. We have a choice of many stables in our area, but I
- agree with Bill Steinkraus who feels that, for children, the first teacher
- should be good with children, the second a good technician, and the third, a
- world-class trainer. (If either of them ever make it that far!) I'll be
- happy if they love it as I do. I'm also a computer lawyer in my other
- life. Glad to know you all!
