- Help!
-
- I am purchasing a new mountain bike this week and I am trying to decide
- whether to get 175 or 180 mm cranks. I am 183 cm tall (6' 2") but am
- mostly legs having a 91 cM (36") inseam.
-
- I rode on 170 mm cranks two years ago, and found them uncomfortable, like I
- was on a childs tricycle. Last year I switched to 175's and liked them. I
- read in the November issue of "Mountain Bike Action" in an article called
- "Secret Setup Tips of the Pros" (p. 100) that people over 6' tall should use
- 180's. I sometimes experience mild knee pain, so I want to keep a decent
- cadence, suggesting shorter cranks. But at the same time, I like the
- comfort and torque of longer cranks. The knee pain is usually at the
- beginning of the season and never amounts to more than a mild discomfort.
- It usually only affects my right knee. The pain went away completely
- last year after adjusting the cleats on my SPD shoes. I also tend to go at
- it a little harder than I should at the beginning of the year (but hey, our
- season is too short!)
-
- What's the net general opinion?
-
- This one's probably to Jobst.
-
- I am trying to decide whether to leave the stock 32 spoke wheels on the rear,
- or go with a 36 spoke. Both would be relatively the same price, the local
- shop ("Earle Industries" for local readers) is awesome in the customer
- service department.
-
- I'm wondering if having a different number of spokes on front and rear is
- going to cause me some problem I don't yet know about. My concern is more
- with strength than speed, and I can't see 4 spokes and nipples adding that
- much wind drag and weight, and I like the strength benefits. Is there that
- much difference? I'm 85 Kilograms (about 190#) and 183 cM (6' 2") tall and
- I tend to ride hard with a balance of off-road and on-road (on-road only long
- enough to get to the off-road :)
-
- The bike incidentally is full Shimano Deore XT built on a Cadex CFM-2 frame.
- I have added alloy bar ends, Shimano Deore XT SPD pedals and nothing else.
- Any suggestions for nice additions (such as Ringle seatpost binder, etc.)
- would be appreciated. Functionality and strength is more important than cost.
