- Loctite comes in three colors:
-
- Blue, which is moderately strong, and which you put on BEFORE you assemble
- the parts.
-
- Red, which is so strong that if you use it you will need a torch to remove
- it. Bad.
-
- Some other color, which you ooze into the thread after assembly.
-
- Use blue. The red is no good because you will have to cook some vital parts to
- get things apart, and the third flavor requires clear access to the threads,
- which you do not have in a headset.
-
-
- One thing you need to worry about: if the threads come loose because the parts
- being screwed together settle, loctite will not help. Only if the threads come
- loose because the nut or bolt unscrews due to vibration or fretting will
- loctite help.
-
-
- The canonical example of a joint where loctite will not help is the crank/BB
- spindle joint. I do not know whether loctite is good for headset lockrings.
- It's counterintuitive, but Ralph Grundler has had good experiences ...
