  14. When I was in the British Virgin Islands last August, (have had a
  15. second home there for 20 years) I wandered into the local
  16. VW/Land-Rover dealer to see what was being imported.  They had a new
  17. beetle (white) on order for customer delivery.  It was due in a couple
  18. of months and had a price tag of over $9000.  (That distressed me
  19. because as recently as 6-7 years ago they were selling for $4K or so.)
  20.  
  21. I didn't ask whether these were Brazilian or Mexican; they get 'em
  22. from both sources.  Late models running the streets there have few US
  23. features that tend to run up the costs.  No belts, no safety glass, no
  24. pollution gear, no heaters.  And until recently they had the same
  25. engine that powered my trusty 66 beetle.

  27. Such a bug would make lovely transportation but couldn't pass many
  28. state inspections in the US.
