- Well... I was in the IS side of the business, but got a very good feel
- for it over the years. I have no vested interest in making false claims;
- I don't even own stock in an insurance company right now.
-
- For one thing, the market is extremely competitive; a guy who thinks
- nothing of plunking down $30 grand on a toyota will make 50 phone calls
- trying to find a premium $40/yr cheaper.
-
- The regulations are very complex, and vary greatly from one state to
- another. We installed a system which used a database of over 60mb of
- state regulations to assist underwriters in putting together valid
- poilicies.
-
- Auto claims are the worst; a $500 fender-bender can generate inches of
- paperwork, abusive phone calls from customers claiming that the body rot
- on their '67 chevy only appeared after the accident last week, and
- they're going to need 6 months of chiropractic care from a 3mph
- impact. (Ask me about chiropractors, too; they make lawyers look honest)
-
- Fraud: Not even workers' comp has the level of fraud seen in the
- consumer auto market. California estimates that almost half of the
- damages claimed in auto accidents are fraudulent. Other states see
- similar numbers.
