  19.    Time to do some math ... here are the diameters of 195/60R15, 205/60R15,
  20. and 205/55R15:

  22. 2 * (195 * 0.60) + 15 * 25.4 = 615 mm
  23. 2 * (205 * 0.60) + 15 * 25.4 = 627 mm
  24. 2 * (205 * 0.55) + 15 * 25.4 = 606 mm

  26.    So the 205/60R15 will be going about 2% faster than the speedometer
  27. indicates, while the 205/55R15 will be about 1.5% slower.

  29.    The 0.6 cm quoted above is correct, but it has to be counted twice,
  30. since the tire appears at the top and the bottom of the wheel.

  32.    For those wondering about similar numbers for other sizes of tires,
  33. the difference is large for smaller wheels, fatter tires, and larger
  34. aspect ratios.  My car has all three compared to the above; to go
  35. from the stock 175/70R13 to 185/70R13 would cause an increase in
  36. actual speed vs. speedometer of around 4%:

  38. 2 * (175 * 0.70) + 13 * 25.4 = 575 mm
  39. 2 * (185 * 0.70) + 13 * 25.4 = 589 mm
  40.  
  41.    A 185/65R13 would fit better:

  43. 2 * (185 * 0.65) + 13 * 25.4 = 570 mm
  44.  
  45. (under 1% difference), but such tires are quite rare.
