  14. This is the first time I am posting on Usenet, I hope I am doing 
  15. this correctly. Anyway, I need some help. Last week I moved my 
  16. system from one room to another and I, unfortunately, dropped my 
  17. Acoustic Research ES1 turntable down a flight of stairs. Needless 
  18. to say, there was extensive damage: 
  19. (1) the motor does not operate properly (the motor pulley doesn't 
  20.     turn smoothly)
  21. (2) the inner platter is cracked
  22. (3) the tonearm (AR) is inoperable (one of the connecting wires to 
  23.     the cartridge is torn and the entire arm is very "loose")
  24. (4) one of the dust cover hinges broke
  25. (5) the plastic cover cracked
  26. (6) there are numerous scratches on the cherry-wood surfaces and 
  27.     some edges are chipped.
  28. (7) I don't really know how the suspension system was affected.

  30. I called several local dealers and none of them fix AR turntables. I
  31. even called AR in Canton, MA; they told me that they have been out of
  32. the turntable business for 2 years (getting killed by CDs). They have
  33. some parts (like the motor ($60) and inner platter ($83)) but not others
  34. (like the tonearm, cover ...). They can fix the suspension T-bar for $70.
  35. It looks like I'll have to fix it myself, but I wonder if I need 
  36. special tools, or skills to do it. Is the damage too severe to ever 
  37. obtain the quality of sound reproduction it originally had, and thus 
  38. not worth the time and money? 
  39. I'd appreciate any info on where to get parts and any schematics 
  40. (prices if possible). 
  41. Any other advice would be greatly appreciated (email or 908 582-5618).
