  26. This is pure liberal bullshit. It's completely wrong.

  28. I grew up as lower-middle-class in the 60's in New York. All around me were
  29. kids much poorer than me, most of whom did NOT have any "rage, despair, or
  30. criminality".

  32. My parents and these other parents were very hard working. Many managed
  33. to move their families out of the city and achieve a better life for
  34. themselves and their children. Even those parents that couldn't move made
  35. sure their kids got an education that would let them lead a better life.

  37. How did the parents accomplish this? Thru hard work. Thru avoidance of
  38. conspicuous consumption. Thru two-parent households. In many families
  39. the father worked at a relatively low paying job during the day and often
  40. worked evenings at a second job. The mother often cleaned offices for
  41. minimum wage at night.

  43. The one way they DIDN'T accomplish this is thru welfare (or public assistance,
  44. or whatever PC euphemism is in vogue these days).

  46. The Republicans have this right. Being poor isn't what makes it easy for
  47. "rage, despair, and criminality to fester". It's the lack of family values.
  48. Such as a work ethic. Such as two-parent families. Such as respect for basic
  49. societal and religious laws like "thou shall not steal". The biggest cause of
  50. the collapse of the inner cites is the complete breakdown of family values,
  51. accelerated by if not directly caused by the ascendency of the welfare state.
