- Rule #1 for changing the workplace: Always pitch the change in how it will
- be better for the company!
-
- For example: you want to job share so you can have more time with your
- children.
-
- You could go to your boss and state your case and how much happier you'd be,
- but your boss has a deadline, three people breathing down her neck over
- some disaster, and probably doesn't really care about your happiness since
- she's had 4 miscarriages and 5 divorces and has sacrificed her life for the
- company. Like she's really going to change the status quo for you.
-
- Or, you could look at the requirements of your job and find a way in which
- having two people working part time would benefit the boss (more hands during
- a crunch, no distractions on job X by jobs Y and Z, etc.). You offer more
- work for the same pay. POOF! You're job sharing!
-
- It would be nice to live in a world where family values are more important
- than the bottom line. We don't. So our job is to prove how attention to
- family values improves the bottom line. It's all a sales pitch. And I know
- how horrified some of us are of the thought that we're salesmen. But we can
- learn. After all, it's for our kids.
-
- I don't do a lot of things right, but I've succeeded so far in this one area.
- I remember a woman who heard about my 4 day work week and wanted to do the
- same. She went to our boss (he said yes to me) and said, "Judy's doing it,
- I want to to." He said no. When I was working two days a week from home
- telecommuting a collegue went to our boss (different boss) and said, "Judy's
- doing it." He said no.
-
- For both of these cases, I went in with ways which proved the change would
- be more productive for me, help out a need in the company, and in some ways
- make my boss' work easier to do. People will make changes that will help them
- more quickly than changes that will help you. Figure our how what will help
- you will help them too.
