  12. Actually, I believe we did talk about it when things like this
  13. happened.

  15. 1. Once when I was walking home from school, a man offered
  16. me a ride.  I was 16 and old enough to be warned about getting
  17. rides from strangers, but for some reason I thought he was
  18. someone from church (I often got offered rides by my mother's
  19. friends from church).  Once I got in, he started suggesting
  20. I go with him for a ride somewhere.  I repeated "My mother
  21. is expecting me home" until he took me home (my backup plan
  22. was to hit him with my schoolbooks and run).  As soon as I
  23. got home, I told Mom and one of my sisters exactly what
  24. happened.

  26. 2. Once, when I was in high school, I took an obscene phone
  27. call.  I didn't quite realize it was an obscene phone call
  28. until I had hung up, because the guy was mumbling so much
  29. that all I could make out was that he appeared to be offering
  30. me some kind of job.  After declining the offer, I spent
  31. a little time piecing together the words and guessing at
  32. what words could sound similar to the nonsensical ones I
  33. had heard, guessed what had happened, and immediately went
  34. to the next room to tell my sisters (and laugh about it).
  35. I don't remember for sure whether I told my mother when she
  36. got home, but I almost certainly did.

  38. 3. I think I remember that one of my siblings saw an exhibitionist
  39. and told my mother.

  41. My mother was open and relaxed about answering all of our questions
  42. about sex, and there were plenty of books around the house (like
  43. Our Bodies, Our Selves) that we could look at if she wasn't around
  44. or was busy or we didn't feel like asking her.
