- My best friend's son is 6 1/2 and my son is 4 1/2 and they are growing up
- like cousins. We don't see them that often, but the two boys know that this
- is a special person who will be in each others lives forever.
-
- Well, Marcus will always be faster, bigger, stronger, etc. than Mitchell and
- Mitchell accepts this to a point. But it is hard on him to always be the
- little kid and watch Marcus show off. So while they were over last weekend,
- Mitchell showed Marcus his computer game and said, "Here, I'll show you how
- to play."
-
- Marcus responded in a very childlike way, "I don't need you to tell me. I
- can figure it out for myself."
-
- Well, the look on Mitchell's face was so sad. He just crumbled, looked at
- Marcus and said, "Fine." He then walked off to his room crushed.
-
- Marcus looked at me and recognized that he had hurt Mitchell's feelings. And
- he was very upset. He suddenly realized that it was more important for
- Mitchell to feel important and wanted than for Marcus to show off how smart
- he was.
-
- Marcus went and asked Mitchell to help him figure it out because he didn't
- understand how this part went. I was so proud of Marcus even though he's
- not my child. I think that 6 1/2 is very young for a child to pick up on
- how important he is to another child and that his need to be superior is
- less important than a smaller child's need to be appreciated and wanted.
-
- These two boys will be very special firends their whole lives. It is so
- wonderful!
