- The vacations I remember taking with my parents (other coast, but it
- doesn't matter much) were mostly extended car trips -- we'd drive to
- someplace, get a room, go to the local sightseeing attraction, spend
- the night, maybe another night or two if there were lots to see and
- do, then move on. I suspect a kid might get bored with day hikes if
- the scenery wasn't different from day to day. I'd suggest picking a
- place where you can do something different every day. The gold
- country comes to mind. Hit the railroad museum in Sacramento on your
- way. You might also check out the Mendocino area -- beaches, Fort
- Ross, etc.
