  16. The vacations I remember taking with my parents (other coast, but it
  17. doesn't matter much) were mostly extended car trips -- we'd drive to
  18. someplace, get a room, go to the local sightseeing attraction, spend
  19. the night, maybe another night or two if there were lots to see and
  20. do, then move on.  I suspect a kid might get bored with day hikes if
  21. the scenery wasn't different from day to day.  I'd suggest picking a
  22. place where you can do something different every day.  The gold
  23. country comes to mind.  Hit the railroad museum in Sacramento on your
  24. way.  You might also check out the Mendocino area -- beaches, Fort
  25. Ross, etc.
