  23. My daughter sucked her thumb at bedtime and when she was very tired or
  24. worried--she didn't do it in such a way that it affected her teeth
  25. (some kids pull on the teeth, some don't) and I figured there was no
  26. harm in it.  But as she got older, it really did seem strange to see
  27. an 8-year old with her thumb in her mouth.  I also worried that one of
  28. her friends would see it some day and tease her.  Finally, during one
  29. of her, "why can't I pierce my ears" speeches (I had been telling her
  30. that she could, when she was 13), a light bulb went on & I made a deal
  31. with her--pierced ears in exchange for an end to the thumbsucking.

  33. She later told me that she slept on her hands the first night, but after
  34. a few days, she said that it doesn't even seem appealing to her
  35. anymore.  Her ears get pierced next week.

  37. Now, a little boy might not be so easily swayed with the same bribe  ;o)
  38. but if he's still sucking his thumb in a couple of years, there may
  39. well be something else that he _really_ _really_ wants that would
  40. make a good bribe.  I wouldn't try it with a 5-yr old, though.
