-
- My daughter sucked her thumb at bedtime and when she was very tired or
- worried--she didn't do it in such a way that it affected her teeth
- (some kids pull on the teeth, some don't) and I figured there was no
- harm in it. But as she got older, it really did seem strange to see
- an 8-year old with her thumb in her mouth. I also worried that one of
- her friends would see it some day and tease her. Finally, during one
- of her, "why can't I pierce my ears" speeches (I had been telling her
- that she could, when she was 13), a light bulb went on & I made a deal
- with her--pierced ears in exchange for an end to the thumbsucking.
-
- She later told me that she slept on her hands the first night, but after
- a few days, she said that it doesn't even seem appealing to her
- anymore. Her ears get pierced next week.
-
- Now, a little boy might not be so easily swayed with the same bribe ;o)
- but if he's still sucking his thumb in a couple of years, there may
- well be something else that he _really_ _really_ wants that would
- make a good bribe. I wouldn't try it with a 5-yr old, though.
