- I sucked my thumb until I was 10. My parent tried everything to get me to
- stop, so I too went underground with my thumb sucking. I quit when I was
- 10 because I decided I was too old to continue. I really remember putting a
- lot of effort into it, and was pleased with my sucess, not that I could share
- it with anyone, since I wasnt supposed to be doing it in the first place.
-
- I am quite sure that pressure from my family had nothing to do with my
- stopping, but did add to the stress of what I was doing. It is hard to
- evaluate, but giving me a hrd time about it adds to stress, and sucking my
- thumb helped comfort me, so it is possbible that the if they had let me be,
- I might have given it up sooner.
-
- I did need braces for an overbite, and my dad used to tell me that the
- overbite was a result of my thumb sucking. I felt bad about that, but
- when I finally did go for braces (actually a retainer), my dentist
- immeidately diagnosed the cause as a result of me resting my tougue against
- my front teeth.
