  26. The first is secondhand, from my mother who substituted for my
  27. older sister when Kathy couldn't make it to a babysitting job.
  28. Kathy was about 14, I guess, and this was a new job, referred
  29. from one of her regulars.  Mom arrived and the young mother just
  30. gave her the baby (three WEEKS old!!) and left rather quickly.
  31. After the mother left, Mom discovered the baby had a high fever
  32. and diarrhea!!!  The mother was only supposed to be gone an
  33. hour.  Mom walked and urged water on that baby for TWO HOURS,
  34. waiting for the mother to return; no emergency numbers, nowhere
  35. to reach the mom, no medication.  When she finally returned, 
  36. Mom (by her own account) really read her out, telling her
  37. 'this baby is SICK and must see the doctor right away!  You have 
  38. NO BUSINESS leaving this baby!  This baby could have died from
  39. dehydration!!  You're just lucky I knew that and kept feeding it
  40. water; if my daughter had come, she might not have known and the
  41. baby MIGHT HAVE DIED!'  -- she went on like this for some time,
  42. trying to make an impression on this incredibly foolish mother.

  45. My story is rather similar.  I too was about 14, I guess, and
  46. had done a lot of babysitting.  This family was experiencing a
  47. divorce; I'd stayed with their two 5- or 6-yo children before 
  48. the divorce, and was now working for the mother.  She left about
  49. 7:00, saying she'd be back by 11:00.  Well, the 5-yo girl was
  50. sick, kept throwing up all evening and all night after bedtime.
  51. She was so sad and so patient and cooperative; I felt
  52. tremendously sorry for her, and we just kept changing the
  53. sheets.  The mother hadn't mentioned the illness at all; perhaps
  54. she didn't know.  But she'd left no phone numbers and didn't
  55. return till 3:30 in the morning!!!!  Me, 14, needing my sleep (I
  56. did call home for advice) just waited.  I lectured HER when SHE
  57. came home, although not nearly as strongly as my mother had with
  58. the baby -- after all, I was just a kid myself.  I don't think I
  59. sat for them again ...
