- Seeing all this talk on leaning technique vs non-leaning technique
- (from now on referred to as LT and NLT) I decided to try out the LT
- the other day to see how it felt... The second of the two observations
- below, is more important

- o While leaning (balancing my wt on the bars) I can do the
- hardest level for 40 minutes easy. I have enough strength in
- my arms to balance my wt for 10 minutes easy without moving my
- legs at all. (I am trying to show off... :-), bear with me)

- o More importantly, it dawned upon me the reason why some people
- found doing a higher level easier on the stairmaster than
- doing the lower level. Before this I could never comprehend
- this fact. What happens is as follows... Once you have your wt
- balanced you are not really using (at least I wasn't) your
- wt to push the pedals down. Instead you push these with your
- ft (note that if using NLT, you cannot apply a force higher
- than your wt but this is not true anymore with LT... an
- argument for its superiority :-)). Anyway, the net result
- is that you might end up using more effort at a lower level.

- roughly speaking in NLT, the force remains constant (your wt)
- and in LT, the velocity remains constant (relatively, this is
- very very rough). Therefore, in NLT at a lower level the
- velocity decreases (they increase the friction) but in LT the
- force increases. The power expended by the human therefore
- decreases in NLT but increases in LT.

- Now, as far as which method is better, go for the LT only if you know
- what you are doing...

- PS: Maybe it is like neck rolls... If Cindy Crawford does them, it is OK (most
- experts agree) but not for us common folks

- doing neck rolls.
