  18. (i.e., your posting about how you got out of your house when you had
  19. that fire.  An excellent article, btw.)

  21. You'd be amazed at how fast kids can get into trouble.  And you not only
  22. *can't* watch them every second, you shouldn't -- how else can they learn
  23. to do things on their own.  (I should point out, of course, that this
  24. is a direct corollary to the attitude I strongly suspect you have towards
  25. the government -- that at a certain point, people, big or small, have to
  26. be allowed to take responsibility.)  It's my job as a parent to walk
  27. a very fine line on that matter -- and to try my damnedest to ensure
  28. that the inevitable mistakes aren't dangerous.

  30. Want an example?  My son (age 3.5) knows how to wash his hands by
  31. himself, and *always* uses just the cold water.  But he almost always
  32. washes his hands in one bathroom -- till the time he washed his hands
  33. upstairs instead.  Well, he doesn't quite know left from right yet,
  34. so he reasoned that the faucet near the door was always the cold water.
  35. Yes, he's smart -- but he was also wrong, of course.

  37. Fortunately, we don't have tankless hot water heaters, or I'd have been
  38. dealing with a scalded hand...

  41. a lesson the easy way.  But I can't predict what he'll try next...
