- ACTION ALERT:
-
- The following article appeared in The Record on 1/21/93, the
- largest daily in Congressman Robert Torricelli's congressional
- district in New Jersey.
-
- "Candidate for U.S. Post Rebuts Critics on Cuba"
-
- WASHINGTON - A Cuban American lawyer being considered for a top
- State Department Post on Wednesday disputed claims by exile groups
- that he may seek to soften the United States hard-line policy
- toward Cuba.
-
- Mario Baeza, a partner in a New York Law firm, said through an aide
- that he supports the US trade embargo against Cuba, contrary to the
- claims of some ion the exile community.
-
- "He would abide by it and enforce it," the aide said.
-
- Baeza had been due to be nominated to the key post of Assistant
- Secretary of State for inter-American Affairs.
-
- But aides to President Clinton decided to reconsider the nomination
- after protests from conservative Cuba exile groups. Baeza's name
- was crossed off a list of State Department nominees that was sent
- to Capitol Hill on Tuesday.
-
- Baeza's aide said further discussions with Clinton Administration
- officials were planned today.
-
- Rep. Robert Torricelli, D-Englewood, chairman of the House Sub-
- committee that deals with Latin America, also expressed concern to
- Clinton aides because Baeza's views on Cuba appeared to vary
- significantly from Clinton's, a Torricelli spokesman said.
-
-
-
-
-
-
- An AP piece in another New Jersey Paper, The Jersey Journal,
- entitled "Cuban American Backs Embargo" stated:
-
- Exile groups mounted a fierce campaign against Baeza, citing in
- particular his visit to Cuba last June as part of a group invited
- to attend a seminar on business opportunities in Cuba.
-
- Baeza said through the aide that the trip lasted six hours and its
- main purpose was to visit family members who still live in Cuba.
- Baeza was born in New York but spent much of his child hood in
- Cuba.
-
-
- LET THE FOLLOWING INDIVIDUALS KNOW THAT THEY MUST STOP LETTING THE
- CUBAN AMERICAN NATIONAL FOUNDATION DICTATE US POLICY TOWARDS CUBA.
- THE CUBAN AMERICAN NATIONAL FOUNDATION HAS LABELLED BAEZA A
- COMMUNIST. PROTEST THIS RED-BAITING. BAEZA IS ALSO AN AFRO-CUBAN.
