- It's as easy as that:
- The ATI-Vantage and ATI Graphics series all contain a build in Super-Vga
- Graphics Card. So even on the old series you can use the Xfree-VGA driver
- to use this cards. The card behaves like an ordinary ATI-XL card. For the
- old card there was a limit for the VGA-memory of 512kB, as this was distinct
- from the Video memory for the 8514/A part. On the newer cards SVGA and
- 8514/A part use the same memory of up to 2MB. So on the old cards you
- can not get a resolution of 1024x768 because there was not enough memory
- in the VGA-part of the card. On the newer card you can probably get even
- higher resolution on the VGA-part of the card.
-
- The problem with the X8514-server may be that this does not use the timings
- which are in the Xconfig file. The 8514/A card is the one who provides the
- proper timings for the accelerator part. On the ATI Ultra cards these can
- be configured using the INSTALL utility which is on the disk that comes with
- the video card. The factory default is that there is no resolution higher
- than 640x480 available on the monitor. So if you have not configured the
- card under DOS, it thinks that your monitor is not capable of 8514/A resolution.
- So all you have to do is boot MSDOS (or DRDOS if you like) and configure the
- card for your monitor. After that these settings will be stored in an EEPROM
- on the card.
-
- The advantage of the X8514 driver for the Pro and Plus is that it should be
- faster than using the VGA-based X-server. I don't know if this is still true
- for local bus or EISA cards.
-
- Hope this clarifies some things about the X8514 driver
