-
- Tvtwm uses the concept of a virtual desktop, that is larger than the
- (physical) screen. What you see is really a part of the desktop.
- You can move your window on the desktop. Windows can be configured to
- stick (i.e. always appear on your screen, no matter how the desktop is
- mapped).
-
- Ctwm uses the concept of workspaces: the desktop is what you see in
- your window, but you can have multiple desktops. With a nice button
- panel you can switch between workspaces. Windows can be configured to
- stick (like tvtwm), or to appear in one or more workspaces.
-
- Which is better depends on what you want. If you need a big desktop
- and do not mind scrolling all of the time, tvtwm is what you need. If
- you want to organize your work by using multiple desktops for
- different purposes, ctwm is best.
-
- I have been very happy with tvtwm for years, but I used it to organize
- my work by dividing the big desktop in smaller parts and switching
- between these parts. This is precisely what the workspace concept of
- ctwm does, so I switched to ctwm when it came out.
-
- BTW: The concept of workspaces is not new. It has been inplemented in
- several 'rooms' type packages. As far as I known, only the HP window
- manager and GWM have implemented it in the window manager (where it
- belongs). And ctwm, of course.
