  11. My Sun 3/260 is suffering from watchdog reset problems.  A watchdog
  12. reset occurs every 20-60 minutes.  I would apreciate help in learning
  13. about watchdog resets on my machine and how to fix it.

  15. First a few questions, and then the details of my investigation so
  16. far.
  17.  
  18. 1) What causes a watchdog reset on a Sun 3/260?  My understanding is
  19. that it is a hardware detected inconsitency often associated with a
  20. timout while polling something.  The only mention in the manuals is
  21. associated with the ie0 interface.

  23. 2) Can my battery for my real time clock be running low and causing
  24. the watchdog reset?  The machine is 5 years old.

  26. 3) People have suggested that it might be a heat related problem.  The
  27. board does run hot, but the two fans at the top work and I do not
  28. notice any thing blocking the air flow.  Also the 20-60 minute period
  29. seems independent of how long the machine has been powered on.  How
  30. hot can the chips get?

  35. A few months ago I had watchdog reset problems every few days.  I had
  36. no ethernet connection and did not do an "ifconfig ie0 down".  After I
  37. had changed this, I had no problems with watchdog resets for 3 weeks.
  38. My next watchdog reset was in 3 days.  Next in < 1 day.  Next in 2
  39. hours.  Now I get them 20-60 minutes appart.

  41. The watchdog reset seems to be independent of the hardware
  42. configuration or the software running.  I get the watchdog reset with
  43. the full system or the full system minus one board (with correct
  44. jumper placement).  The watchdog reset occurs when running unix or
  45. even at the prom monitor!

  47. When 4-6 watchdog resets have occurred, the prom monitor is stuck.  It
  48. does not accept anything from the keyboard.  The reset switch will
  49. cause another watchdog reset, but the keyboard is still frozen.  I
  50. must power the machine off to talk to the prom monitor.

  52. It may be just my imagination, but the watchdog resets seem to be
  53. farther apart when I run the folowing shell script from a shell prompt
  54. in unix (multi-user or single):
