- We've got a new-to-us Xylogics 472 tape controller that we think ought to
- work with an older Cipher M890 tape drive. The Cipher used to work on a
- Unibus controller, and has what we assume is a Pertec interface. It is in
- fact branded Emulex at the front panel. The 472 is in an Aviv
- Multibus-to-9U-VME adapter. I have the book showing jumper settings for
- the 472, but I don't know what might be "right", and there are lots of
- jumpers on the Aviv adapter as well. I'm trying to use the stock SunOS
- 4.1.1 xt driver, which I've configured with flags 0 'cause it's a
- single-density drive. The board is in slot 9 of a 4/280S, and I've removed
- the 903 & 904 backplane jumpers.
-
- What happens is, at boot time I get:
- xtc0 at vme16d16 0xee60 vec 0x64
- xt0 at xtc0 slave 0
- xtc0: WARNING: 20 bit addresses
-
- but any attempt to reference the drive (we tried dd and tar) fails with
- "I/O error" and the drive unloads and goes offline. I can see that the
- board is in fact jumpered for 20-bit addresses, but I don't know if this is
- right. The board supplier says that it last worked in a 4/260 as is.
-
- "mt status" produces:
- xt0: not online [but the drive online light was lit]
- /dev/rmt12: no tape loaded or drive offline
- [neither true - and why unit 12?]
-
- Has anyone out there got a known-to-work 472 configuration at hand that
- they could describe to me? Anyone know anything specific about the Cipher
- 890? Any and all comments will be appreciated.
-
- I will summarize responses.
-
- Many thanks,
