- Where I work, our small network of mostly Sun workstations is to be
- connected to Internet. After some study of _TCP/IP Network Administration_
- by Craig Hunt, there a number of questions about routing that I cannot
- answer. Perhaps I need to get more information from the campus network
- administrator about the details of the campus network.
-
-
- Our campus has the class-B address 138.5.0.0. Our network has been
- assigned the subnet address 138.5.120.0. The gateway on the campus is
- 138.5.1.1. The campus topology looks like
-
- Internet
- |
- 138.5.1.1
- |
- | campus backbone
- ------------------------------------------------------
- |
- bridge
- 138.5.110.0 | | 138.5.120.0
- -------------- --------------------------
- | |
- 138.5.120.n 138.5.120.m
-
- My understanding of the bridge is that it will adaptively segregate
- packets between the backbone and the subnetworks on the other side,
- but not between the two subnetworks.
-
- As we are not connected, our
- broadcast address: 138.5.120.255,
- netmask: 255.255.255.0,
-
- On being connected is it
- 1)
- broadcast address: 138.5.255.255,
- netmask: 255.255.0.0,
- gateway: 138.5.1.1
- OR, interpreting both 138.5.110 and 138.5.120 to be part of one
- subnet
- 2)
- broadcast address: 138.5.31.255,
- netmask: 255.255.224.0,
- gateway: 138.5.1.1
- OR
- 3)
- no change.
- ??
-
- My understanding is that 1) will work, but it seems indiscriminate
- in distributing packets; 2) & 3) make access to the gateway
- uncertain in the light of the examples in _Net..Admin_, & 3)
- leaves it uncertain as how to access 138.5.110.0 (will 138.5.1.1
- send packets back?)
-
- Please reply by email; seems wasteful to post a reply.
