- Well Luke,
-
- It is true that in theory (understand?) Token Ring is a constant 4 or
- 16 mbps throughput network, however, that factual theory (get it?)
- only applies if you have a small(define please) number of workstations.
-
- Once the workstation count grows significantly, you will see degrading
- token passing. I know I will get flamed for this!
-
- First of all, 10BaseT is Ethernet... That's what we campus Network
- Managers call it anyway. Ethernet can be degraded by large numbers of
- workstations. However, Ethernet specifications state larger numbers
- than Token Ring...
-
- Let's face it Luke, Networks grow... .Ethernet cards and hubs are
- cheaper than Token Ring... More products to support Ethernet are
- available... and it can be bridged simply and safely with ease.
- Just remember, it may be a small Network now... but it will
- grow......and grow... and grow......
-
- Other factors relate to Network slowness besides topology.
- Protocol, Ethernet board types and sizes (be safe by 3Com,
- their founder invented Ethernet and their boards are guaranteed
- for life! ) can significantly effect performance. Get a 32 bit
- board for the server and Etherlink III's for workstations.....
-
- But, if you want to buy Token Ring, like perhaps you need to
- connect to an IBM system (they only lost Billions this year,
- and they invented Token Ring). Jesus, I better stop....
-
-
- LET THE ANTI-ETHERNET/PRO-TOKEN RING FLAMES BEGIN!!!!

- P.S. I have a combination FDDI and Ethernet backbone supporting
- over 1800 workstations..... works for me!!!
