  12. this is a rather trivial point, but i thought i would bring it up while
  13. netware 4.0 was still in beta test and this MIGHT be able to get
  14. "sneaked" into the grand program (hint hint, novell!).

  16. today, the sys: volume on one of our servers ran out of space.  no big
  17. deal, but for a few minutes all the users couldnt print, etc.  turns out
  18. the error log file was 14 MEGABYTES large!  granted, we know now to be
  19. fairly liberal with our space given to the sys: volume, but we didnt know
  20. that back when we gen'ed this server.  anyway, i zipped away the error
  21. log file (being the anal-retentive type i am), then cleared it.  the 14
  22. meg free got things back on track.

  24. now, the amazing thing is that when i zipped the file, it save 92% !!!!
  25. of the space.  it ended up just over 1 Mb in size.  so, my two cents worth
  26. of suggestion for future reference is that maybe the error log be stored
  27. in a compressed format -- after all, when you have EVERY little activity
  28. being logged to it (like all the ATPS stuff) it can grow PRETTY fast!

  30. yeah, we should check and clear our error log regularily. yeah, we should
  31. give at least X meg to sys: volumes.  yeah, we should . . .  but we have
  32. 10 servers and people forget and this was old.  and, the point is, it 
  33. happened, as things will.
