- THE SYMPTOMS
- Since I upgraded to System 7.0 with Tune-Up 1.1.1, my Mac II freezes
- randomly apparently when two or more sounds occur too closely
- together. I can almost always make the system freeze by opening the
- sound control panel and clicking rapidly for a while on the volume
- slider or sound choices. It can freeze at other times as well. I have
- experienced freezes when I got mail during a MacX session. The Sun
- mailtool rang 2 1/2 times and the system froze. Some other
- applications seem to have problems with sound as well (e.g. After
- Dark). I can bring up the system monitor with the programmer's switch
- after the freeze. I have avoided freezes for a day or two by turning
- the volume for the system alert and and other sounds I can control to
- zero. It seems to make no difference whether or not I have extensions
- on or off.
-
- I have tried most of the motherhood and apple pie fixes like
- reinstalling the system, zapping PRAM, etc. to no avail. The problem
- does not seem to occur with System 6.0.7 with limited testing. About
- the only thing I haven't tried is pulling my Dove Marathon 030 and
- trying the original 68020. I hope that's not it because I don't think
- I could stand to go back to a slower machine.
-
- MY CONFIGURATION
- Mac II with Dove Marathon 030 card (replacing 68020)
- System 7.0 with TuneUp 1.1.1
- virtual memory--off; 24b addressing
- Dove Marathon 030 software 2.4
-
- THE SOLUTION
- ???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
- ?Any suggestions for what to try next would be appreciated?

- Thanks very much. Please reply by email and I will report the
- resolution if it appears that others could learn from it.
