- One parameter to consider in the SW vs. DW decision is background
- printing. Another is the amount of disk space given up. My experience
- with the stylewriter is a year or so old, so it may have spawned some
- useful background printing utilities.
- My deskwriter proved it's worth the other day when Moire, Think C and
- the Deskwriter conspired to crash my mac (OK, it was probably me in
- Think C). Upon reboot, the HP Print Monitor came to the fore with
- a dialog informing me that incompleted print jobs were located in the
- print queue and asking me if they should be continued.
- VERY SMOOTH!
- On the other hand, HP is notorious (especially in the PC world) for
- insisting on having its own fonts. Sure, it will use others, but 1 MB
- of HP bit mapped fonts is a bit much. I haven't tried deleting them
- just yet...
-
- I think the HP may have a longer set-up time than the DW, especially
- since I always print in the background, but I can get back to my work
- quicker. How often does it matter that you have the printed page in
- hand in a given time? It's really watching the Printing in Progress
- alert that sucks.
