  18.                APPLE TO PRODUCE FUTURE VERSIONS OF HYPERCARD

  20.     CUPERTINO, Calif., Jan. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- As part of a continually
  21. increasing commitment by Apple Computer Inc. (NASDAQ-NMS: AAPL) to
  22. world-class development tools, Apple and Claris Corp. today announced
  23. they will move product development of future versions of HyperCard into
  24. Apple's Developer Tools organization in the Apple Developer Group.
  25.     Apple plans to coordinate HyperCard development efforts with its
  26. AppleScript project to give Apple a unified approach to, and a
  27. competitive advantage in, the emerging area of next-generation software-
  28. developer tools.  AppleScript is an advanced scripting technology for
  29. integrating applications to create custom solutions and to automate
  30. routine tasks.  It is scheduled for release in the first half of 1993.
  31.     Apple and Claris believe that this strategy assures the best future
  32. for HyperCard and its users.  With HyperCard as a strategic cornerstone
  33. of Apple's development-tools strategy, developers and users can look
  34. forward to significant investments in future tools for the HyperCard
  35. development community.
  36.     Claris will continue to market, sell, and support the current
  37. version of HyperCard until Apple ships the next version of HyperCard.
  38. At that time, HyperCard will become an Apple-labeled product and Apple
  39. will assume worldwide responsibility for support of the HyperCard
  40. product.  Apple will ensure a smooth upgrade path to future HyperCard
  41. releases to both current HyperCard users, as well as new customers who
  42. buy HyperCard from Claris.
  43.     "HyperCard perfectly complements Apple's portfolio of developer
  44. tools," said Kirk Loevner, vice president of Apple's Developer Group.
  45. "HyperCard and next-generation development technologies such as
  46. AppleScript underscore Apple's long-standing commitment to excellent
  47. authoring and high-level programming tools."

  53.     HyperCard was transferred from Apple to Claris in late 1991.  Since
  54. then Claris has released HyperCard 2.1 with QuickTime extensions, and
  55. the HyperCard Player and the HyperCard Developers Licensing Kit.  There
  56. are currently more than 100,000 active corporate, education and
  57. commercial HyperCard developers; three million active users; and the
  58. quantity and quality of HyperCard applications are at an all-time high.
