  12. Apple no longer produces any machine that uses the original desktop
  13. Macintosh II case design.  Such machines can be upgraded to the level of the
  14. Mac IIfx, or they can have various third-party accelerators added, but there
  15. is no really clean way to bring these machines to current top-of-the-Mac-
  16. line standards of performance and features.

  18. My proposal would be for Apple to design and produce a new version of the
  19. Quadra 950 motherboard, rearranged as required to fit in the six-slot desktop
  20. case.  As far as I can tell, this would allow plenty of board area to lay
  21. out the components, although there might not be room for all of the 950's
  22. RAM and VRAM SIMM sockets.  The chief obstacle that I see in such a
  23. redesign would be locating the Quadra video, ethernet, and sound input ports,
  24. since the six-slot case doesn't have any mounting holes for them.  The
  25. solution I came up with is to design a relatively simple daughterboard that
  26. connects to the main board at the location of the rightmost NuBus connector
  27. in the II/IIx/IIfx boards.  The would be a permanently mounted board, the
  28. sole purpose of which would be to hold those three connectors, which would
  29. pass through the case at the existing slot popout.  The other slot locations
  30. would remain free for the 950's five NuBus slots.
