- Apple no longer produces any machine that uses the original desktop
- Macintosh II case design. Such machines can be upgraded to the level of the
- Mac IIfx, or they can have various third-party accelerators added, but there
- is no really clean way to bring these machines to current top-of-the-Mac-
- line standards of performance and features.
-
- My proposal would be for Apple to design and produce a new version of the
- Quadra 950 motherboard, rearranged as required to fit in the six-slot desktop
- case. As far as I can tell, this would allow plenty of board area to lay
- out the components, although there might not be room for all of the 950's
- RAM and VRAM SIMM sockets. The chief obstacle that I see in such a
- redesign would be locating the Quadra video, ethernet, and sound input ports,
- since the six-slot case doesn't have any mounting holes for them. The
- solution I came up with is to design a relatively simple daughterboard that
- connects to the main board at the location of the rightmost NuBus connector
- in the II/IIx/IIfx boards. The would be a permanently mounted board, the
- sole purpose of which would be to hold those three connectors, which would
- pass through the case at the existing slot popout. The other slot locations
- would remain free for the 950's five NuBus slots.
-
- What do you all think? (especially Dale Adams)
