- Thanks to all who responded to my original posting. It turned out
- that the cause of my "printer not responding" error was a loose
- power cord connection on the printer, and had nothing to do with
- either the serial cable itself, nor whether it was plugged into
- the modem or the printer port on the Mac.

- I never suspected the power cord connection was bad since the
- "power" and "ready" indicators on the printer were on, and the
- printer passed its self-test. But because the cord has a 4-prong
- plug, what apprently happened was that the prongs supplying power
- for the printing mechanism were solid, but the ones powering the
- communications interface to the Mac were not. Re-seating the
- plug fixed it.
