- In December I bought a LaCie SilverScanner I, bundled with Adobe
- Photoshop, Color Studio and Read It. Liked it all. However, when LaCie
- came out with the SilverScanner II, I decided to take advantage of the 30
- day satisfaction guarantee and trade the SS I for a II. They offer the
- same software/scanner combinations as with the SS I; all prices are $200
- higher.
-
- I called them Monday and arranged to send back the scanner; upon receipt
- they'll credit my account the price of the scanner alone ($500 off
- scanner/software package). I then ordered an SS II, which they said I
- would get in about a week.
-
- Tuesday morning I fedexed the scanner. Tuesday afternoon LaCie called and
- said it would be a month to 5 weeks before they could ship, due to orders
- taken at MacWorld.
-
- I still have a scanner ordered from them, but can cancel the order if
- necessary. Since I have to wait a month I may take another look at other
- scanners, such as the HP.
-
- That's the situation; here's what I don't like about it:
-
- * I bought the scanner in part because of the unconditional 30-day money
- back guarantee. When I arranged the return, I was surprised to learn that
- "once I opened the software, it can't be returned." That wasn't a problem
- since I wanted to keep it, but if I decide to cancel my order, I'm
- apparently stuck with the software. And I can't sell it, because it
- says "bundled version only, to be sold only with hardware" on the box.
-
- At minimum, I think they should have told my the software wasn't covered
- under the guarantee. However, it's hard to evaluate the scanner without
- using the software bundled with it!
-
- * I don't like the fact that while apparently many people in the company
- knew the availability situation, the person who took my order didn't.
- If I had know the wait would be a month I would have tried to arrange to
- keep the scanner longer.
-
- * I would have appreciated it if they had told me Dec. 29 (when I ordered
- the SS I) that they would be introducing the II soon. I would have
- waited for the II, thus avoiding the additional shipping charges.
-
- It's not that I'm terribly upset with LaCie. They told me I could keep
- the SS I until I got the II (even though it would have been beyond the 30
- days). Unfortunately, fedex had the scanner by then. The customer
- service guy told me they were switching to a new computer system soon.
- (That's nice, but it doesn't help now.) I also know that it hasn't been
- that long that they've sold their products directly only (that is, you
- can't buy LaCie stuff from places like MacWarehouse) and they may still be
- working out the bugs in their processes.
-
- I'd like to know if other people have had similar/better/worse experiences
- with this company. Also, the documentation I got with the SS I was pretty
- lame (wrong page numbers in table of contents, for example). They now
- have new documentation. Is it better?
-
- Also, if anyone has recommendations on other scanners, I'm interested in
- hearing them.
-
- Thanks in advance for any advice/comments.
