  14. This probably does not directly answer the original post, (startup
  15. cost is almost double the cost of a floptical drive), but I have been
  16. using the new Bernoulli Multidisk 150 for about a week now, with very
  17. satisfactory results.  I ran my own cost/meg comparison and then also
  18. factored in disk speed.  I initially was looking for optical, but
  19. don't anticipate need for more than 1G.

  21. Some comments on the Bernoulli:

  23. The Multi 150 is backwards compatible with the 90.  (They claim that
  24. there is a slower read/write, or something, however, it will read and
  25. write to the 90M disks).  It also reads/writes to 35, 65, and 105
  26. disks.

  28. When compared to the Syquests, it is much faster for startup and
  29. spindown.
  30.  
  31. They guarantee media for 5 years.  This will not necessarily resurrect
  32. lost data, but will save the cost of new media in case of a failure.
  33. The mechanism of the disk/drive is such that it is hard to destroy
  34. data by head crashes, etc.

  36. There is a drive that is specifically for the Mac (at a cheaper
  37. price), or one designed for use on Mac or PC (or other platforms,
  38. also).

  40. They are just starting to show up in the back of the Mac rags, and
  41. bear looking at.
