- Well, a little while ago I was trying to put my internal drive into the case
- of a broken external drive, for portable storage. Didn't work, but at least a
- little good came of it.
-
- If you have a IIsi with an internal Conner 40mb hard drive, adding an activity
- LED is pretty easy. Lift the drive up a bit (you will have to 'unsnap' it from
- the case on the right & left) so that you can see the entire front of the
- drive. There should be a set of pins, which will look like this head-on:
-
- .... .
- . .... .
-
- As you can see, there is a rightmost pair of pins a bit separated from the
- others. This is the pair of pins you connect the LED to. Just get some longish
- wires, solder them to a LED, and obtain some means of connecting the other end
- of the wires to the pins. Voila! An activity light. The most difficult part
- of this project is deciding where to put the LED when you are done. You can
- drill a hole in the case (extreme probably warrantee voiding!!). You can also
- pop out the power LED, and pop in the HD LED, but then you can't see the power
- LED. I ended up putting it to the left of my floppy slot. My floppy drive has
- been broken for a long time, so that was a good place to put the LED (would you
- believe it's cheaper to buy a new external drive than to replace it with another
- internal drive??)
