- Over the past year and a half I have become increasingly interested
- in multimedia on the Mac. I have taken classes instructing me in
- many of the mainstream Mac multimedia applications. i.e., Director,
- Magic, Action and several design enhancing apps like Swivel 3d pro,
- Premier 2.0, Typestry, etc...
-
- About four months ago I decided I needed something at home that would
- be less frustrating than working on my LC. Although my LC had 10megs
- of RAM and 16 bit color, it was far from satifactory in the speed department.
-
- Well I come back from break and my IIvx is waiting for me. This was
- quite a surprise, as I was told that it would not come in until
- February. I had spent a good month or so trying to decide
- whether I should buy a IIci or a IIvx. They are very close, overall,
- in the speed department. If I bought the IIci I would need the following
- extras to do my media stuff. A graphics card that would give me
- at least 16 bit color, sound input of some type (like a MacRecorder),
- and I really wanted one of the new multi-spin CD-ROM drives.
-
- Once I put the package together I was over the price cost
- of the IIvx CD -Academic Bundle that our campus reseller was selling.
-
- So for the same price of my made up bundle IIci I got the following:
-
- Mac IIvx
- 1 meg vram for 16 bit color
- 5 megs RAM/80 meg HD
- 300i internal Multisping CD-ROM (Which runs Quicktime very well)
-
- New Apple 14" Display
-
- Extended Keyboard
-
- Bundled Software
- Macromedia Action
- Aldus Persuassion
- DIVA Videoshop
- Inspiration
-
- All this for the same cost of the IIci homemade bundle minus the software.
-
- The CD-ROM drive is very fast (as far as CD ROM drives go).
-
- Although I have had some problems that I probably should mention as well.
- When I brought everything home and set it up I noticed something was
- missing. There were no installation disks, manuals, or promised CD ROM
- bundle accessory kit that was to come with the IIvx CD model.
-
- I did have a few CD-ROMS that I had gathered in anticipation of my new
- machine but I couldn't use them because I had no caddy or system driver
- software for the drive. Well, I downloaded the system driver from
- ftp.apple.com and bought an extra caddy at the Electronics Boutique
- and everything worked fine.
-
- The Apple reseller promised me that Apple had shipped the CD ROM
- stuff and bundled software manuals/disks which should arrive sometime
- next week. All in all I am very satisfied with my new machine.
-
- Anyone want to buy a used LC?
